Draw US Counties on a Terrain Map
The hard level. Choose a state, then outline one of its counties or draw the border between two neighbours, with rivers, ridges and valleys as your only clues. More than 3,000 counties, parishes and boroughs across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
How county play works
Each state is its own set: pick one above and the map zooms in to county scale. Draw a region asks for one county’s outline; draw a shared border asks for the line between two neighbouring counties of the same state. Borders that cross a state line are not asked here; play them on the states level.
What makes counties different
- Many county lines in the east follow rivers and ridgelines; in the plains and the west they are survey lines, so the terrain shows nothing and the challenge is scale and position.
- The tolerance for border questions shrinks with the question: a county border typically allows about a kilometre, a state border twenty.
- Louisiana has parishes and Alaska has boroughs and census areas; Virginia’s independent cities count as their own units. Very small units (under 10 km²) are not asked.
Data
County boundaries are the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2025 cartographic boundary files at 1:500,000, simplified for play (see map data). Each state loads separately, so the page stays light.
